Criticism of this work has been unfair. When reading any material the primary requisite is knowing how to place the correct value on data. Criticism of this book usually runs along the lines that the author was a self-promoter and therefore his data can not be trusted. All of which may be true in terms of his assertions. But there is valuable data in this book, if only one knows how to judge true from false. When researching, it is necessary to examine the conclusions of the writer carefully because mankind in general is notoriously poor at discerning the truth from falsehood. This applies to writers and their conclusions. This is where determining the truth or falsity of a particular datum is a must. The book is entertaining and chocked full of valid information--if only one knows how to determine what it is. I recommend this work for the researcher and those who read for enjoyment. It does give a window into a very chaotic period of this country's existence. So, be your own critic and ignore the usual criticism of this book and delve in. Just be mindful of the relative importance and correctness of the data. Otherwise it is a book by a colourful and adventurous individual in a colourful and adventurous time in the life of this country.Product details

History of the United States Secret Service La Fayette C 18261868 Baker 9781176703377 Books Reviews
Interesting subject matter and type easy to read.
It is well known that this autobiography stretches historical fact both to create drama to drive sales in the 1860's and to feed the ego of the man who is its subject. Still, that is not the problem here since its loose play with history tells a great deal about Baker's view of himself and the world in which he lived. The problem is that this edition of the book is not created through retyping of the original. It was created by scanning an original copy with optical character recognition software, and this was no more than 95% accurate. As a result, there is hardly a sentence in it without errors in spelling leaving the reader spending half his time trying to figure out key words, dates, etc. rather than understanding the actual content. The publisher clearly made no effort to proofread the resulting OCR text and correct the errors. They should be ashamed to charge for it. Poor quality. Do not bother with it unless you really need it for some reason.
Fascinating view of the Secret Service and the period. Written at the time it was actually happening.
