California cultists, duplicitous damsels in distress, and dangerously high stakes conspire against Joe Quinn, a private eye who is beginnnig to feel more like a knight-errant

Joe Quinn is cut adrift. He’s lost everything. His girl. His job. His place in the universe. A security head for a casino in Reno just can’t afford to have a gambling problem.

Life takes a turn from tragic to strange when Quinn finds himself on the doorsteps of a religious cult’s tower in the remote California hills. Quinn hitched a ride from Reno but never thought he’d end up in a place like this. But a gambler has to play the hand he’s dealt. When one of the cultists asks Quinn to check on a man named Patrick O’Gorman and slides a not so small amount of money in his jacket, well, that’s just the sort of hand Quinn has been looking for.

Thing is, Quinn soon finds out, O’Gorman disappeared under bizarre circumstances several years ago. For reasons he doesn’t entirely understand, perhaps for the sake of having a purpose, Quinn begins a lurid quest to uncover the truth. What he finds out instead is that there are just as many crazies outside the walls of a cultist tower as there are inside.

How Like an Angel eBook Margaret Millar

Margaret Millar was wife to Ross MacDonald - the heir to Chandler and Hammet but for my money that title should have been shared as a husband and wife team. Millar is a phenomenal writer and deserves to be better remembered. Her mysteries rise above the genre.

In this outing, a down on his luck gambler and private investigator finds himself the overnight guest of a cult in the middle of nowhere. The member who helps him asks him to find out what happened to a former member. Finding out what happened involves two cases, inevitably connected as they always are in the noir American pulp and a lot of old griefs. If you are a fan of the mid-century pulp novel and aren't ready to re-read the greats, Millar is definitely an author to explore.

How Like an Angel eBook Margaret Millar Reviews

Good mystery novel, interesting characters and a compelling read..
Such a masterfully written piece of work! The last two sentences of the book give the whole story such a shocking, and yet reasonable, twist. I've read six of her novels in two months, and never got disappointed. I'll make sure to add all her other works to my reading list.
I usually do not read mystery books. It was really good-involving.
One day (by chance !!!),our detective/stranger Joe Quinn, hitched a ride from a guy and
was then just "dropped off" by the guy who did not want to drive him all the way home.
Quinn was left alone near some place called "the tower' . The people who live at the tower
were a group of "religious fanatics" who lived very simple and according to the "lord" or
"master". One of the 'sisters" there was friendly to Quinn (they were not unfriendly but...)
Quinn stayed one night and before he left,Sister Blessing, has an unusual request, she
asked him to find a man named,"Patrick O'Gorman. (AND DO NOT TELL THE OTHERS)
All right,no problem. YEAH...there is a problem, Patrick O'Gorman was DEAD and this starts
the whole story rolling at the speed of a train, right down the tracks, going this way and that way.
It was an enjoyable ride.
I read through the whole book slowly. as I was reading, was forming my opinion of what I thought
really happened. I has a couple plausible ideas and one of them was correct (!) and if I could say
it without revealing the end,(i will say),"hiding in plain sight". Actually, some of the book is convoluted where
I am thinking,'wait, that does not make sense..I am lost". "This does not jive with what happened."
I am curious if other readers would think so ??? WHO---HER ???? and WHAT was the reasoning ????
I would like to see more reviews of this one.
Always a favorite writer, lost touch with her work. Nice reconnect. The twists and turns in her writing have underpinnings, suggestions of "perversion", not spelled out, that give her straightforward and I'd say a bit dated, writing it's page turning drive.
I love the vintage feel of this, and the main guy quinn, a jaded detective but with a heart. If you like old california as a setting, and unusual plots, this ones probably for you. The action centers around several locales and keeps you guessing.
She is such a great writer. Pulled me in and wouldn't let me go.
I don't want this. I don't even own a . Went to order, no cancel option.
